Rear Admiral, U.S. Navy, retired

Dr. McDaniel became the 62nd commander of the Naval Medical Center Portsmouth, Virginia, on 11 September 1992.

Rear Admiral William James McDaniel, Medical Corps, U.S. Navy, attended college on a full wrestling scholarship, he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Physiology in 1964 from Oklahoma State University. In 1964 he began studies at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine and received his Doctor of Medicine Degree in 1968. He completed his internship at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1969.

After receiving his commission in the Medical Corps on 29 December 1969, Rear Admiral McDaniel attended the Naval Aerospace Medical Institute in Pensacola, Florida where he received training and became a Navy flight surgeon.

His subsequent duty assignments include Flight Surgeon at Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, California; Marine Corps Air Station, Futema, Okinawa; aboard USS TRIPOLI (LPH-10) off the coast of the Republic of Vietnam; and Naval Air Station, Whidbey Island, Washington.

In 1973 RADM McDaniel began his Orthopedic Surgery Residency at Naval Hospital, Oakland, California. In 1977 he began a series of assignments which included Chief, Department of Orthopedics, Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain; Acting Commanding Officer and Director of Clinical Services, Naval Hospital, Rota,

Spain; Orthopedic Surgeon, Naval Regional Medical Clinic, Department of Orthopedics, U.S. Naval Academy; a student at the National War College, Fort Leslie J. McNair, Washington, D.C.; Seventh Fleet Surgeon for the Commander, U.S. Seventh Fleet, aboard USS BLUE RIDGE, Yokosuka, Japan; and Commanding Officer, Naval Hospital, Oak Harbor, Washington.

Rear Admiral McDaniel assumed command of Naval Hospital Charleston, South Carolina on 27 July 1988, where he was selected as Rear Admiral in November 1989. In June 1990, he became U.S. Pacific Command Surgeon, Camp H.M. Smith, Hawaii.

RADM McDaniel’s other assignments and activities include Navy Wrestling Champion, 1973-1977; Interservice Wrestling Champion, 1975-1976; and World Silver Medallist in CISM Games, Rome, Italy in 1974. He has been the National Team Physician for Track and Field World Championship, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil in 1976; and Team Physician, World Championship Basketball in Teheran, Iran in 1977; World University Games, Bucharest, Romania in 1981; and for the U.S. Boxing Team, LaPaz, Bolivia in 1982. Rear Admiral McDaniel was also a U.S. Olympic Team physician for the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California.

Rear Admiral McDaniel’s military awards include: Defense Superior Service Medal; Legion of Merit (two awards); Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal; Meritorious Unit Commendation; National Defense Service Medal (two awards); Humanitarian Service Medal; Sea Service Deployment Ribbon; Overseas Service Ribbon; Vietnam Service Medal (with 2 battle stars) and Fleet Marine Force device.

RADM McDaniel is a member of the National Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, the Society of Olympic Physicians and the American Medical Association.

Dr. Harris attended the University of Oregon and Lane Community College.  After receiving his medical degree at the University of Kansas School of Medicine, he completed his residency at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA.  He is board certified in Internal Medicine and has been in practice, affiliated with Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital, for more than four years.

Chris Gellert is the president of Pinnacle Training & Consulting Systems, LLC.  Having earned his Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in 1999, and his Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1992, Chris is uniquely experienced as a licensed physical therapist, Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S.) and a certified personal trainer with over 19 years experience.

Chris practices in Maryland treating general orthopedics, specializing in the spine. He has extensive clinical experience in rehabilitating all ages, having worked in outpatient, industrial rehabilitation and private practice settings. He is presently pursuing a clinical residency specializing in orthopedics/manual therapy, advanced training, and ultimately his doctorate in physical therapy.

Chris continues to work as a consultant and lecture to personal trainers at national fitness conferences and private seminars on human movement, rehabilitation, and fitness. He has created evidence-based, advanced continuing educational materials (books, courses, DVDs, and seminars), and has authored several articles on human movement and fitness for various fitness publications. He is working on several new DVDs on human movement and post-rehabilitation training,as well as a book on human movement. An invaluable addition to NAFC’s board, Chris is one of the most dynamic presenters in the industry today.

Frank Torres, M.D., specializes in cardiology, and brings comprehensive knowledge of and extensive experience with heart health to NAFC’s Advisory Board.  Highlights from his resume include: Principle member of Bellevue Cardiology at Cascade Medical Center and Issaquah Cardiology at Medical Center of Issaquah. He is currently engaged in his own Cardiology Specialty practice in Bellevue Washington.

Mike LeBoss has been involved in the fitness industry for over 35 years, and was instrumental in developing  the ‘self-start’ philosophy in approaching athletic training to maximize his clients’ self-actualization in their sport training program.  He has faithfully upheld the principles of proper form and Body Mechanics through his career as a leading fitness consultant and educator.

Mike is the founder and owner of Mefit(TM) Fitness Centers in Portland, Newport, and Sheridan, Oregon, as well as currently acting as Executive Director for the National Association for Fitness Certification (NAFC), after serving as an NAFC course presenter for over 12 years.  He has co-authored a training manual on Bio-Mechanics for the National Board for Certified Sport Trainers (NBCST), targeted at educating trainers on the importance of risk/benefit training and applied Body Mechanics.

Behind his full‐time commitment to spreading wellness as a professional endeavor, Mike is a NBCST Master Instructor, NAFC Certified/NAFC Master Instructor, NASN Licensed Sports Nutritionist, SPIN Instructor, and is Madd Dog Athletics Certified.

Pete Terlaak, CPC, is a graduate of The Academy for Coach Training, accredited by the International Coach Federation (ICF). With over 20 years of professional, life coaching experience, his clientele ranging from those just beginning on their career paths, to those in the midst of occupational transition deciding to embark on entirely new directions in their lives.  Guided and known by the motto “Coach for Freedom,” Mr. Terlaak focuses on facilitating a sense of freedom that emerges from responsible choices for change, and the new opportunities and possibilities that follow.

Stephen Burns, MD

Stephen Burns, M.D., attended Florida Presbyterian College, later completing medical school and residency at the University of South Florida.  Dr. Burns is a board-certified pediatrician specializing in Asthma, Attention Deficit Disorder, and Aspergers Syndrome. He is a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Oregon Pediatric Society and the North Pacific Pediatric Society. Married with two children, Dr. Burns’ personal interests include hunting, snowboarding and umpiring baseball games. He is also a member of the Newport Softball and Baseball Association.

Dr. Burns has been in practice for 24 years, affiliated with Samaritan Pacific Communities Hospital.

William Singer, Ph.D., received his doctorate in Counseling at Oregon State University. Dr. Singer has won the State of Washinton Governor’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Community Service.  He has held professorships as both undergaduate and graduate school faculty in Washington at The University of Puget Sound and City University.  He completed his internship at community psychiatric centers in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Singer now serves as mentor and advisor to individuals, professionals and organizations seeking guidance and direction.  

Dr. Singer’s private practice as a clinician has spanned over 30 years counseling and coaching families, couples, individuals and children. He is a National Board Certified Counselor, Family Therapist with a special interest in motivation and Sport Psychology. An inspiring motivational speaker, his counsel helps provide a path to increased athletic and personal performance.

Dr. Singer’s practice extends into the realm of sports psychology working with individuals and professional athletes as a strategic partner, helping achieve paths to higher performance. He also provides guidance in improving a life-balance between professional effectiveness and personal growth.

Combining a blend of inspiration and motivation to action for his clients in their professional, avocational and personal lives, his experience as therapist, teacher, coach and business owner have afforded him insight into a broad range of life issues that he passionately shares with others.

Leslee Bender

Leslee BenderLeslee Bender has been in the fitness industry for over 25 years, and has been selected as one of the candidates for 2010 instructor of the year by IDEA. Leslee is the original creator of ‘Safe’ Pilates, utilizing the Pilates Coach mini ball (now the Bender Ball). Leslee has produced over 25 DVDs illustrating these methods, and has presented in over 20 countries worldwide. Leslee’s  certifications are from ACE, AFAA, ACSM, NASM, and she holds a B.A. from the University of Nevada, Reno, and is now enrolled in the Gray Institute GIFT program.

As the original creator of the Bender Ball™ and Bender Method™, Leslee has presented at all of the main fitness conferences throughout the world; including IDEA, IHRSA Club Industry, Sara City, ECA, AFPA, AAAI and many more. Hundreds of clubs have utilized her form of Pilates training where she has integrated her unique Selective Stabilization™ methods for taking Pilates training to a whole new level.  For these efforts, Leslee is currently nominated for New Mind Body Programmer of the Year for ECA New York.

Leslee’s philosophy is: “Everybody can do the Bender Method of training from Core Training to Pilates. My instructional techniques are based on real results.
